Expert Evaluation and User Experience Testing

Expert Evaluation and User Experience Testing

Having decided that your IT product is not 100% user-friendly and efficient and needs redesigning, you first need to evaluate how serious these problems are and what efforts are required to eliminate them.

The main methods of evaluation that we use to rate the quality of an interface are expert evaluation — carried out by usability and interactive design experts — and user experience testing — carried with the end users participation.

User-Centered Design

User-Centered Design

Designing a new user interface or reengineering (redesigning) the existing interface comprises conceptual and structural design, detailed prototyping, intermediate testing and interface specification. We also offer development guidelines for user interfaces.

Usually, the first phase of a full life cycle project is research and users' requirements gathering, domain study, business and technical requirements elicitation. The next phase, the interaction concept, informational architecture and basic ideas development, are based on the collected in the first phase information. Finally, the interactive prototype of the product, documentation and guidelines are developed. The last phase of the project is usability testing which is the most reliable source for making final and successful decisions.

Visual Design

Visual Design

Detailed design and the creation of an interactive system prototype are not all that is needed to develop a finished, original product. As a rule, you also need to «color» the interface i.e. create an individual and graphical style that suits the context, develop the appearance of specific functional and informational interface elements (buttons, windows, dialogs etc.) and create a set of icons and illustrations.

It is therefore highly recommended that the usability specialists are closely involved in the process of developing the user interface visual design, since unmonitored design development could harm the results of their efforts and lead to significant deviation from the ideas contained in the product's interface. The completed visual design must support the solutions instated during the development of the user interface and must itself meet a whole range of users' requirements, not only esthetic.

Development Monitoring

Development Monitoring

Work on the design of a digital product interface rarely concludes simultaneously with the completion of every stage of development and the handling and documenting of results. Even if all the results are available and all the limitations accounted for, there might arise new, unforeseen issues with the product interface in the process of implementing the developed solutions. The development team (programmers, managers, designers etc.) has to resolve these problems. Not to mention that in the process of developing the product, there will inevitably be a certain amount of on-the-spot decision-making and realizations of new limitations and compromises.

Yet developers themselves often fail to decide how to address all of the requirements and limitations — without changing the ideas and solutions underlying the user interface — in the process of implementing them. Also, periodic on-the-spot decision-making during the course of the project (relating to location, sizes, colors and behavior of elements) may mean that even following the concept of the product and its requirements, the outcome may be far from what was planned. As a result, the product may end up neither looking nor working how it should, to put it mildly. All or part of the product may have to be reworked, or the client may even reject the product and start looking for a new developer.

Usability Consulting

Usability Consulting

There may be a situation when a digital product in development clearly requires improvements to its usability but the client cannot afford to expend extra resources (time or money) on selective development of the product's interface.

In this case we will arrange to outsource the usability consulting to external experts, as they are needed. The experts will be given an approved schedule, detailing their involvement in the development of the system, working either on the client's office or remotely. They will address any usability issues that need resolving, evaluate the results of work performed, consult, design critical blocks and so on.
